As an entrepreneur myself I thought I'd have a look at the official Startup Britain website thats just been launched. I thought it would be full of loads of great free tools and stuff to help get new businesses off the ground. Instead there seems to be lots of discounted rates, advice forums, training, meetings, etc not really the stuff you need to actually start the business.
The success and likelihood of of a new business starting up is essentially dependent on 3 limiting factors:
- the quality of the idea itself
- the skill set and motivation of the Entrepreneur
- access to startup and working capital
Over the years I've started several successful business's with next to no startup capital, I've always looked to do things myself instead of using expensive consultants or agencies and instead of wasting ti e going to meetings and talking about starting the business I've always found it best to just crack on with it. After all, it's your customers who will tell you whether your business is going to a success or not, nobody else.
I'll give you a simple example of how this works in practice. If you're thinking of buying a property to rent out as an investment, if you want to know whether this will work or not, don't listen to rental agencies, estate agents, business advisors, tv programmes, seminars, etc. Simply put an advert in the free ads, or where-ever advertising a property you may be considering purchasing (don't use the exact address for obvious reasons) at the rent you wish to acheive. If the phone rings off the hook then rental demand is high and this is a goer, if there are no calls then you either need to lower the rent or you've just avoided purchasing a very expensive lame duck. NB - For those of you who are wondering what to tell the people who ring up, just say the property's already been let.
